July marks the end of the summer term and so it felt like an appropriate time to write an update on what we have been doing and let you know about what is coming up. As District Commissioner, I would like to say thank you to all the volunteers who help give the girls in our groups the opportunity to fulfil their potential and experience wonderful opportunities. Without the time and effort of everyone involved, it would not be possible to have Rainbows, Brownies, Guides and Senior Section members meeting at EMC. We always need more volunteers, so if you have any time to spare, we have a role for you. If you are interested, please speak to me or email .
At EMC we are lucky to have groups for all the Sections. Unfortunately we had to close one of the Rainbow units, although we are still hoping to be able to get volunteers to reopen it. The other groups are still going strong. They have been learning all about themselves, undertaking exciting treasure hunts and having a visit from a Guide dog. We have so many future Rainbows waiting to join that we could open two new units, if only we had the volunteers!
We have three Brownie units who also suffer from a lack of volunteers. This year we have seen many volunteers move away but we are just about able to keep all units open but again are looking for volunteers. The Brownies have been having a very exciting time. 4th and 7th went on Pack holiday together to Walton Firs and did lots of adventurous activities and 11th went to PGL and did the same! They have also been cooking, enjoying books at Epsom Library and joining other Girlguiding members at a special showing of Beauty and the Beast.
We have one Guide unit, although it is full to capacity! They are grateful to the Scouts who have lent them their facilities and instructors so they could try out shooting and climbing at EMC. They have also enjoyed lots of outdoor activities including hikes and games and are looking forward to joining 5000 Guides and Scouts at Scoutabout, a large scale camp.
The Senior Section unit has now been open for two years and continues to grow slowly in numbers. The girls are very active enjoying hiking on the downs, orienteering at Horton Country Park and even taking their Promise up the climbing wall! They will join the Guides for summer camp.
I am really delighted to let you know that Lindsay Massingham has finished her Leadership Qualification with the Guides. She has also been awarded her five year service. We congratulate her on these achievements. We are also pleased to let you know that Mary Fox received her twenty year service (many years overdue)!
2017 is the 85th anniversary of the opening of the first Brownie Unit at EMC. We will be having a celebration to mark eighty five years of Guiding at EMC. There will be a weekend of celebrations on 7th and 8th October 2017 with afternoon tea on Saturday, church parade and a lunch on Sunday.
We are also excited to announce that the Quilters are making us a special commemorative banner which we hope to dedicate at church parade. We thank them for such a wonderful gift.
Anyone who has been involved in guiding at EMC at any point is welcome to come along. We will also have a display and would be grateful for the loan of any photos or memorabilia.
