How can we live as a Christian in this day and age? A big question and one we may often ask ourselves when we recognise how poor we are in our determination to follow Jesus. It was with this in mind, that we decided to run The ‘Discipleship Explored’ Course throughout May and June; a course based on Philippians and designed to give us time and space to think about what the Christian life is really all about. Each session began with an introductory DVD and was followed by small group discussions in which we could thrash out some of the issues that affect faith today and think about the fact that there is nothing we can add to what God has already done to save us through the death and resurrection of Jesus. We battled with the idea of discipleship being all about knowing Jesus more and more, so that, as His Holy Spirit works in us, we begin to reflect his character to those around us. It is not about how busy we are, or how many good deeds we think we do. A total of forty two people attended at some point and it was lovely to see how we could be honest and open in sharing the struggles and uncertainties of life and hopefully, bit by bit, learning more of this God who loves us so much.
The question now is, of course, where do we go from here? How can we keep pressing on, as the apostle Paul puts it, to know more of Christ and the power he offers to His people and His church? We need to be serious about pursuing Christ. It doesn’t just happen. Being part of a House Group can help us to stay challenged, as well as encouraged and supported as we seek to be the Body of Christ here at EMC.
