Small groups are at the heart of Methodism and play a key role in church life, particularly in a church as large as EMC. Small groups of people get together in each other’s homes for fellowship, study, prayer and mutual support. Everyone can join a Small Group - there are a wide variety which meet at different times and days in the week and, when necessary, new groups will start.
We want Small Groups to provide a safe environment where we can have fun and fellowship together as we support and encourage one another in our faith, but always in an informal atmosphere where everyone feels valued whatever their contribution. New members and visitors will always receive a warm welcome, so please contact us if you would like further information.
The Wednesday evening Small Group meets weekly in Albert Road, but usually with breaks during the school holidays. We start at 7:45pm with coffee and catching up with each other’s news and then move into Bible Study, seeking to find its relevance for us today as it teaches us about God’s love and purpose for us. Many people love to take part, but some sometimes just want to sit and listen, which is fine. We believe in the power of prayer and, as such, pray about the things that we learn and the things that are affecting our lives at the time. We plan to finish by 9:30pm, or shortly afterwards. Our aim is always to grow in our faith, supporting and encouraging one another and new members are always welcome.

The Woodcote Small Group
We meet fortnightly in the evening on a Tues, Weds or Thurs and at various venues. Every quarter, we sit down and populate diaries for the following quarter, choosing days to suit as many people as possible. The most common venue is in Woodcote Hurst, Epsom.
The group is highly focused on Bible study. We find that talking about God and exploring His character revealed in the Bible is honouring to Him. There is so much we can learn, not only from His word, but from each other. The atmosphere is very relaxed and informal. There is no pressure to contribute, just sitting and listening is fine.
We meet at 8.00pm and catch up with each other for half an hour over a cup of tea. The study starts at 8.30pm and ends promptly just before 10.00pm with a short time of prayer.
Every quarter we aim to have a social-only evening, either Bring-a-Dish or a BBQ in the warmer months. Delicious BBQs at the Blakeburns’ have become unmissable events in the calendar.

Thursday morning Small Group
The Thursday morning Small Group was set up for those who prefer a daytime meeting to the evening and has already grown into a large very friendly group of people who are all enjoying sharing in fellowship together. We meet fortnightly in Jackson Close, starting at 10:00am with coffee and chatter and aim to finish by 11:45am, although there is never a need to rush off. Bible Study is central as we study God’s Word to discover more of His love and purpose for us in our daily lives. We always leave some time to pray about the things we learn and the things that are affecting our lives at the time. We are always pleased to welcome anyone who wants to join us.

Thursday evening Small Group
The Thursday evening Small Group meets approximately fortnightly in St Martin’s Avenue at 8pm and typically finishes at 9.30pm. We are made up from members of EMC and St Martin’s (Church of England). We start with coffee/tea and biscuits as well as catching up with each other’s news. We then spend time looking at a Bible passage based on the latest study guide that we are following; for example, we are currently following a guide called “Introducing Jesus - life changing encounters from the Gospel of John”. Clive Dougal, from St Martin’s, usually leads our debate and our prayer.
