The Foodbank at Epsom Methodist Church has been running since 2012 and is open Friday afternoons from 2.00-4.00. It is run by the Epsom & Ewell Foodbank, part of the Trussell Trust network. To date the five Epsom and Ewell Foodbanks have fed over 10,000 people.
To be able to receive help someone must have a valid voucher, obtainable from local agencies such as:
-
the job centre
-
health visitors
-
social workers
-
the Citizens Advice Bureau.
The foodbank provides an emergency parcel of 3 days of nutritionally-balanced, non-perishable food, the quantity is according to the number of adults and children indicated on the voucher. Clients can only receive 3 vouchers in a six-month period and the Trust has a database to identify multiple applications.
While the food parcel is being prepared, the recipient is offered a warm drink and a biscuit and those Foodbank volunteers, who are specially trained to know about local services, can offer practical guidance helping them to break out of crisis. They are also offered a prayer with someone, should they wish to do so.
In addition Epsom and Ewell Foodbank runs “Eat Well Spend Less”, a six-week basic cookery, nutrition and budget management course. It also runs a Furniture Bank, which includes bedding, linens and crockery and which in one month gave out 98 items of furniture and household items.
